Section: Unix

About:
Xscorch is a clone of the classic DOS game "Scorched Earth". The basic goal is to annihilate enemy tanks using overpowered guns. Players can purchase weapons and accessories to defend their tank, and they can attack enemy tanks by adjusting the angle of the tank's turret and the firing power. Xscorch supports gameplay with humans and computer AIs, and network gameplay is in development.

i have used it. still great, but i think that you saved on graphics too much :). even original game had more graphics. in example icons in buy window, graphics buttons and so on. and the original hasn't gtk++ :))

Justin and I are not graphic artists... ;-)

We welcome patches and images, and particularly sound, as there is no soundtrack yet.

However, please note that there are two constraints on graphics in xscorch -- we currently aim in general to replicate the original game's feel, not create a new game based on it (such as a 3D game), and we are not interested in cluttering the interfaces unless it really adds to the look and feel of the game.
I realise that these goals may seem contradictory at first glance, but I believe that they are not, in practice, and that our current inventory menu, in particular, does a good job of meeting both.
In addition, the flexable format of the weapon and accessory definition files, which allows users to create new weapons fairly easily if they are willing to edit a text file, would be greatly complicated by the addition of icons to the inventory menu...

As I said however, we will *always* look at patches and other submissions, and so far I believe we have accepted every such submission we have received.

And I thought I was the only one who loved the age old DOS game.
No fancy graphics but an awsome game revived.
A must have for stratagists.

[»] great game

This is a brilliant game. I've enjoyed playing Scorched Earth, and i like this too. I hope development of this game won't halt like King of the Hill, a similar open source game. Everybody likes scorch :) Are you planning to include network play?
