libsmtp-- is a library that implements the client part of the SMTP protocol. It is a rewrite of libsmtp++ in C. It supports important SMTP features, including CRAM-MD5, CRAM-SHA1, LOGIN, PLAIN, ANONYMOUS, and EXTERNAL authentication as well as SSL encryption.
